The options I am looking at are the CVA Wolf Northwest, CVA Optima Northwest, and the Traditions Vortex Northwest. I'm curious as to what experiences other Hunttalkers have had with these outfits. The overall construction. and look of this budget riffle is impressive. Everything is nice and tight and the seams are very tight. It looks sleek and modern the plastic used is not feel cheap.To me the difference in barrel length is a non-issue. For a few years, and many deers, i have been carrying a 23" barrel. It works good. However, in my opinion, the opening/closing latch on the Optima V2 is a way more better than the latch on the Wolf. My choice would be the Optima V2, because of the latch mechanism.Walmart muzzleloaders totally rock! The two guns we tested were a $288 Thompson Center Omega and a $296 CVA Optima, both in .50 caliber. Your local Walmart, if it carries guns, and not all do, may not have these specific rifles, but you should be able to find the same brands with similar features.I personally prefer stainless so I would go with the stainless rifle. From the accounts that I have read the Optima is a good rifle. You named about the only difference. They both shoot as accurate. The Wolf is lighter and points quicker if that matters to you. Me, i have both and i love the Optima. It’s smooth, breaks cleanly with 3-4 pounds of pressure, and has very little overtravel. The CVA Optima Northwest has a 1:28” rifling twist, making it suitable for most full size (non-saboted) projectiles. CVA recommends using PowerBelt bullets. This is not surprising, considering they are made by the same company. Featuring a QRBP (Quick-Release Breech Plug), which is really easy to remove without tools, the CVA Optima is very simple to clean and maintain. It’s also compact, lightweight, and easy to carry. Compared to the Wolf, the CVA Optima has a slightly longer, 26″ fluted barrel (instead of a 24″ non-fluted barrel) and a stock with a cheek riser.I bought a CVA Optima many years ago. I love it. I hear the Accura is great but have never shot one. I highly recommend Blackhorn 209 powder. Non corrosive, I can shoot many rounds between a full cleaning with no issues. I shoot 100-105 grains with a 240grain Barnes T-EZ over it and it's a great shooter.The CVA Optima V2 weighs in at 6.65 pounds which is under our benchmark for a lightweight muzzleloader. With an overall length of only 41” it is one of the most compact muzzleloaders on our list, but that doesn’t impede its accuracy.
