If you own a Model 51, and are willing to run the risk of a broken action slide, you might understand and agree with me. But make sure and have a back up gun in the trunk. You are taking a serious risk of failure of a badly designed critical part when you shoot a Model 51. They are for stone cold shotgun addicts only, IMO.The action slide on the Ithaca Model 51 has been a real problem for owners. The used replacement slide I purchased is exactly what I needed - it reassembled perfectly and the gun functions correctly. I also purchased a new action spring which should assist in the slide's performance and longevity.The very best decision ever made in the history of Ithaca guns was to copy the basic design of the Remington Model 17. The model 51 barrels have two gas ports that bleed gas to a small piston under the barrel which in turns cycles the bolt. I noticed that on the 30" magnum barrel, for the same gun, (will handle 3" shells) only has one of the two ports open. The guns cycles perfectly with field loads.
