The boat was hard to start from sitting a couple of years but once it got going it would run pretty good. Idle was low and would stall going into gear. Wait for the throttle to advance. As the timing passes the TDC, the first minor pickup will hit and start, opening the carbs. The timing light needs to be utilized to adjust the trigger screw. Let the throttle advance continuously. Now, at idle forward it hovers around 650rpms which is great most of the time. However occasionally it dips down to 600rpms and wants to stall. No lean sneeze or anything this is not a carb issue. I have the same engine only with a Johnson hood. Definately adjust the idle in gear in the water. Mine idles at 1800rpm on muffs and about 900 in the water.Using a regular timing light, boat in water, warmed up, idle timing was 12 degrees ATDC. Spec is 4-6. "Low" tab on was all the way forward (to port). From what I could decipher from the shop manual, loosen screw holding timer base and move the low tab to the left should advance idle timing.
