I have owned a lot of 870's over the years and currently have an 870 HD, a Mossberg 500 breacher and a Mossberg 590A1 6 shot with the 18.5" barrel. The 870's feel a little smoother but I like the safety location on the Mossbergs.The Maverick 88 is a great budget shotgun, I've got a 20" 7+1 leaning by my bed. It's reliable and smoothed our nice with some synthetic motor oil and lots of shooting. Zero issues after cases and cases of buck, slugs and birdshot. That said a 500 combo with 18.5" and 28" barrels is the more versatile and better made firearm.Mossberg 590 vs. Remington 870 Express. ... The 500 has been use by military units for years. You will be able to find a host of aftermarket parts for it.The only bad thing I can see with the Mossberg is the recoil.
